One of the most ominous sounds on earth, particularly to criminals, is that of a pump shotgun action being racked into battery with a live shell. I’ve carried semiautomatic shotguns for both personal defense and as a law enforcement officer, but I still prefer the pump gun.

I’ve found Remington’s Model 870 to be the toughest, most reliable, and easiest to operate pump shotgun on the market. The 870 is great as a no-frills gun, or it can be used as a platform to build a fully decked-out tactical masterpiece. Either way, anyone using an 870 for home or personal defense is an extremely well-armed citizen.
