Fast forward not quite 20 years, and Geissele triggers are found in just about every rifle fielded by U.S. Special Forces. Geissele rails, triggers, and scope mounts can be found on everything from SOCOM M4s to the new HK G28 DMR. Geissele parts have been specified by USASOC for the new M4 Upper Receiver Group — Improved. Geissele secured the rights from Barrett to produce the M240LW and M240LWS machineguns for the U.S. military. In late 2022, it was announced that Geissele had won the contract for the new U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) rifle.

Well, technically the rifle pictured here is a “near clone.” I checked with Geissele to see just how close their commercial rifles are to the ones going to the Border Patrol. For the contract, Geissele is supplying 11.5- and 14.5-inch SBRs to the USBP, although the 14.5-inch gun is labeled the Standard Patrol Rifle. They are also getting 18-inch rifles labeled Designated Marksman Rifles by the Border Patrol. The contract called for both semiauto and select-fire versions and for all the rifles to be black.

Commercially, Geissele is selling 11.5-inch pistols and SBRs, a 14.5-inch SBR, a 14.5-inch rifle with an extended pinned and welded flash hider, and 16- and 18-inch rifles. The commercial models do not have government profile barrels but rather Geissele profile barrels, which are a bit thicker near the barrel extension and gradually taper, but other than that, they are identical to the rifles supplied to the USBP. This isn’t a “maybe someday” situation. Not only has the contract been awarded, but per a government website I observed, Geissele has already shipped enough rifles to satisfy 36 percent of the $21 million USBP contract!

The main thing that makes these rifles stand out from Geissele’s other offerings are the MK20 Super Modular Rails, which are unique to this model. The original government solicitation was a full and open competition with certain go/no-go requirements. The weight was a listed requirement at a maximum 9.5 ounces (without mounting hardware) for a 15-inch handguard. This handguard is the lightest Geissele has ever made while still being sturdy. The rail on this sample is 12.6 inches long with M-LOK attachment slots at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. There are lightening cuts along the top to help it meet the BP’s specified weight. Total empty weight of this rifle is 6 pounds, 2 ounces, so it is optimized for handling.

These rifles are built around cold-hammer-forged barrels manufactured in-house that use chromoly vanadium steel, a chrome-lined bore, 5.56 NATO chamber, mid-length gas system, and a 1:7-inch twist. The gas port is listed as .076 inch in diameter. If you compare it to a government-profile barrel, you’ll see it is slightly thicker forward of the barrel nut, but it is not thick. At the end of this barrel, an extended A2-style flash hider was pinned and welded in place to make it 16 inches overall. Other models are tipped with standard A2 flash hiders.

Reliable Gas System

Geissele builds rifles for hard use, and nowhere is this more evident than in the gas block. A properly installed gas block that does not move is essential for any serious rifle. Underneath the handguard of the Border Patrol rifle, you’ll see Geissele’s precipitation-hardened 17-4 stainless-steel Super Compact Gas Block is pinned in place (in addition to having set screws) in what they call their “bombproof installation.” If you look closely at the top rear of the Geissele gas block, you’ll see a stainless-steel pin set into a notch cut into the top of the barrel.

“I don’t feel that lining up a gas block with dimples and set screws is acceptable,” said Bill Geissele. “Screws don’t line anything up. They have clearance. If there wasn’t any clearance, the screw wouldn’t work. It is not an alignment system, but people expect that to line up their gas system with the upper receiver perfectly. I don’t like that, and I don’t think that’s right. We take every barrel and use a special fixture that works off an alignment dowel in the barrel extension. We get that exactly vertical, and we put that small keyway right near the gas block, and our gas block has a small key that fits into that. That aligns our gas block perfectly with the upper receiver, and the set screws lock it into place, but they don’t align it. The stainless-steel key pin does that. Then we put the cross-pin in the gas block as a bombproof installation.”

Lightweight Yet Strong

As skeletonized as the handguard is, it is rigid. In addition to it using the same beefy Geissele barrel nut and two screws as all their other rails, at the top rear of the handguard, you’ll see it has a keyed mating system to the upper receiver, preventing it from rotating under hard use.

The upper and lower receiver are forged models manufactured by Geissele with hardcoat anodizing. Inside the upper receiver is a manganese-phosphate coated Geissele bolt carrier group. You’ll see the Geissele name etched on the side of the bolt carrier. Bill Geissele is a perfectionist, and after being disappointed time and again by contractor parts, Geissele now makes just about every part in their ARs except for a few pins and springs.

It isn’t just the handguard that is new for this rifle. You’ll also see the new Geissele “Government” charging handle. The levers on this bilateral charging handle are smaller than on previous Geissele models, and on the right side it does not protrude as far as the forward assist (and yes, a forward assist was required for these guns). This charging handle is bilateral; both levers articulate.

Behind the bolt carrier is an H2 buffer backed up by one of Geissele’s Super 42 braided wire buffer springs meant to provide a little extra force to close the bolt on a dirty gun and to last longer. Filling the lower receiver are the parts from the Geissele excellent lower parts kit, which includes a checkered stainless-steel magazine release, stainless-steel magazine catch, and an aluminum oversize Super Duty triggerguard.

The Border Patrol rifle was intended to be a fully featured service rifle with mil-spec or better (where possible) features. While a top-of-the-line Geissele trigger would be nice, that would add too much cost for a government package, so what you see inside the lower receiver is the ALG Defense’s Advanced Combat Trigger (ACT). ALG is Geissele’s sister company, and the ACT features mil-spec components with improved coatings for a smoother, more consistent trigger pull. Our sample provided a 5.25-pound single-stage trigger pull, which is excellent.

Range Report

For accuracy testing, I topped the Border Patrol rifle with a Leupold Mark 5HD 2-10X scope. For everything else, I topped the Border Patrol rifle with the new EOTECH EXPS3 HWS with DCR. That’s a lot of acronyms. The EOTECH Holographic Weapon Sight (HWS) with its circle/dot reticle has been hugely popular since its introduction. The EXPS3 is the latest model with extended battery life and a quick-detach mount. The size of the circle (68 MOA) makes it fast and useful.

The Border Patrol rifle was well-balanced and as light-recoiling as you would expect for an AR-15. The braided wire buffer spring eliminates the annoying twang under your ear as you’re shooting, although that’s not its purpose. The rifle was not shipped with any magazines, and I used Gen M3 Magpul PMAGs exclusively for my testing. I found the rifle to be completely reliable. With most loads, it would do 1 to 2 MOA, sometimes better, which is excellent for a duty rifle — albeit a somewhat expensive duty rifle.

With some pricier brands, you’re paying extra solely for the name. With Geissele, that’s not the case. You’re paying for a product where the manufacturer cares about the quality of each part so much that they’ve decided the only way to ensure the highest quality is to make everything themselves to redesign parts, when necessary, and to improve performance. It wasn’t chance or luck that the U.S. Border Patrol chose Geissele over its competitors; it was because of quality and performance.
