SHOT Show 2010 Day 1

A quick look at some of the new guns from Day 1 of the 2010 SHOT Show.

Benelli Legacy 28

Benelli proudly introduced a new member of its distinguished Legacy family — — the Legacy 28. For the first time in Benelli history, the fast-firing, ultra-reliable Inertia Driven system that drives Benelli semi-auto shotguns now fitted to the highly efficient 28-gauge.

The Legacy 28 blends style and performance in a way that every sportsman will appreciate. A highly polished blued upper receiver gives the Legacy eye-catching originality and contrasts the sculptured lower receiver, which features classic and detailed game scene engravings. Designed for target shooters and hunters alike, the Legacy 28's satin walnut stock sports a WeatherCoat finish, complimenting the wood's beautiful grain pattern making it virtually impervious to the elements. To further dampen the light recoil, the 28-gauge features an "AirCell" recoil pad, providing maximum comfort and effective shock absorption.

Benelli Legacy 28

The Legacy 28 is available with either a 24- or 26-inch Crio barrel that's topped with a super-light, carbon fiber vent rib, red-bar front sight, mid-bead and utilizes Benelli's Crio choke tubes. Unique to all other 28-gauge semi-autos, the Legacy 28 is trimmed down in every respect. The lightweight receiver is reduced in scale and combined with the slim barrel and sleek fore-end.

Black Hills 6x45

The 6x45 is simply a .223/5.56 necked up to 6mm caliber.

Black Hills introduced a 6x45 mm loaded with either a 100-grain Sierra Spitzer at 2600 fps, or an 85 grain Sierra GameKing at 2700 fps. The 6x45 is simply a .223/5.56 necked up to 6mm caliber. That means the cartridge is ideally suited to the AR-15 platform and allows the use of heavier bullets with no loss of magazine capacity. Lighter varmint loadings are expected to follow initial loadings.

Burris Eliminator Laserscope

No more guessing yardage or fumbling with a shaky handheld rangefinder. No more losing sight of your trophy. No more guessing holdover. The Burris Eliminator knows the precise horizontal distance to your trophy and exactly what your cartridge will do.

In use, simply aim the Burris Eliminator at your target and activate the laser using the remote attached to your rifle's fore-end.

In use, simply aim at your target and activate the laser using the remote attached to your rifle's fore-end. The Eliminator ranges the target and lights a 1/3 MOA illuminated aiming dot on its crosshair showing exactly where your shot will go.

CZ Hammer Classic

The new Hammer Classic from CZ-USA will bring back memories of grandpa's shotgun for many shooters. The old side-by-side that hangs on the fireplace will never be safe to shoot with modern ammo, but the new Hammer Classic can help you relive those hunts of yesteryear.

A case hardened sidelock receiver with functioning hammers and long 30 inch barrels might make you think that it's day has passed by, but precision machining and modern steels ensure that this shotgun will be shooting for generations to come.

This 12-gauge is chambered for 3-inch shells and has a length of pull measuring 14 1/2 inches. Drop at comb is 1 1/2 inches and drop at heel is 1 1/3 inches. It's not an existing Federal load in different packaging. Federal Premium pioneered the handgun self defense category with its Personal Defense offerings. These loads were designed for one thing: self defense. The same can be said about the new shotshell offerings. They're loaded to ideal velocities and feature optimum patterns and penetration. Shot sizes and velocities were not available at press time. Look

for these shells to be available spring 2010.

Hornady Superformance

Superformance ammunition is 100 to 200 fps faster than any conventional ammunition on the market today, and achieves enhanced performance in every gun, without increases in felt recoil, muzzle blast, temperature sensitivity, fouling or loss of accuracy.

Hornady Superformance uses ultra progressive propellants that take your favorite SST or GMX bullets to levels of performance that are simply unattainable with conventional propellants.

This is a cutting edge technological advancement in ammunition design that transcends convention and achieves the highest performance of any ammunition on the market today. It uses ultra progressive propellants that take your favorite SST or GMX bullets to levels of performance that are simply unattainable with conventional propellants.

In order to get more velocity in the past, shooters have used a brute force approach--large charge weights of a slow burning powder in a larger cartridge case. Ultimately that leads to more recoil and muzzle blast. The Superformance solution is an elegant approach that utilizes specialized powders'¦at normal charge weights, that impart all useable energy to the bullet reducing the rocket nozzle effect at the muzzle while still increasing velocity.

Weatherby PA-459

I didn't see this coming from Weatherby--the PA-459 home defense shotgun. As the producer of Personal Defense, I get to see a lot of first-hand defensive shotgun training, and hear the comments from qualified instructors about what's good or not good in a fighting shotgun. It looks to me like Weatherby did this gun right.

Weatherby PA-459 home defense shotgun.

To begin with, it has as short a barrel and overall length as the average citizen will want to fool with, which makes it maneuverable in tight quarters. Next, it's 13 1/2-inch length of pull lends itself to the "fighting stance" being taught in better personal defense schools today.

Weatherby's PA-459 is fitted with a Mil-spec Picatinney accessory rail with adjustable rear LPA ghost ring, and fiber optic front blade sight.

You can't just point a shotgun into a room, pull the trigger and expect the payload to mow down all of the bad guys. In fact, in room-to-room ranges, you need to treat the shot payload as if it was a single projectile, and that means aiming your shots. To aid in that respect, Weatherby's PA-459 is fitted with a Mil-spec Picatinney accessory rail with adjustable rear LPA ghost ring, and fiber optic front blade sight. The pistol grip buttstock is ergonomic, and solid enough to use as a striking tool if necessary though the 5+1 capacity with 2 3/4-inch shells should give owners plenty of opportunity to solve their defensive problem before having to resort to using the PA-459 a club.--Scott E. Mayer
