Handguns chambered in .410 bore represent a unique combination of shotgun capabilities with the portability of a pistol. Over the past two decades, the guns that fill this niche have risen in popularity thanks to platforms such as the Taurus Judge and Smith & Wesson Governor, which combined the ability to shoot traditional .45 Colt cartridges with .410 shotshells. It didn’t take long before handguns chambered in .410 established themselves as viable options for home defense, recreational shooting, pest control, and even hunting. The development of purpose-built .410 defensive ammunition has only served to grow their popularity. When you take a closer look at popular models available to consumers and the purpose-built ammunition created for them, it is clear to see why enthusiasts are adding these to their collections.

The Taurus Judge Executive Grade in .410 bore/.45 Colt is built on the legacy of the original Judge was released back in 2006. This hand-assembled iteration of the original sports a hand-polished stainless-steel finish, presentation-grade wood grips, and a brass front sight. Continuing with the hands-on approach to this revolver, Taurus further elevates this revolver by hand-tuning the action, providing the user with a smooth action, crisp trigger, and reliable performance for when you need it most. When paired with a defensive .410 load, it proves itself to be a formidable option for self-defense applications.

The Bond Arms Snake Slayer is a rugged little derringer that packs quite a punch for its unassuming size. Chambered in .45 Colt/.410, it caters to those needing to dispatch venomous snakes or even small game at relatively close distances. One of the features that makes this model particularly desirable is that it is modular, meaning you can swap to additional barrels offered by Bond Arms to meet your unique needs, perhaps for home defense or a practice session at your local range. This derringer weighs in at 22 ounces, providing enough heft to seemingly mitigate felt recoil yet light enough to accompany you on a hike without weighing you down.

Magnum Research BFR

The Magnum Research BFR chambered in .410 bore is a single-action revolver designed to handle both .410 shotshells and .45 Colt cartridges. The revolver’s ability to fire these shotshells makes it quite an effective option for dispatching varmints and small game. Additionally, when paired with shotshells designed specifically for hunting, such as Fiocchi’s Golden Turkey .410 TSS, this particular BFR makes an excellent turkey hunting companion for hunters seeking the ultimate in concealability for sit and stalk hunts versus being stuck in a ground blind. Despite its hefty size and weight, the BFR remains surprisingly manageable thanks to its ergonomic grip and balanced design. Pictured here is the ten-inch barreled option, with endless possibilities if you take advantage of Magnum Research's custom shop.

.410 Shotgun Ammunition: Defensive, Recreational, and Hunting Loads

When it comes to shotgun ammunition, the wide array of options available caters to most, if not all, shooting disciplines and applications in some way or another, including self-defense, general recreation, competition, and hunting. Even with the smallest of shotgun fodder, there remain plentiful options from which to choose, with birdshot and buckshot being the most common.  There are .410 slug options available, but these are typically going to be fired from shotguns as opposed to handguns.

Birdshot is the go-to .410 load for snakes, varmints, and clay targets. Each shell houses numerous small pellets that spread out rather quickly when fired from a handgun, making it easier to hit fast-moving targets. The downside to birdshot is that the light pellets lose velocity and penetration capabilities rapidly once they exit the business end of the gun, rendering it far less effective at further distances. Additionally, it is generally considered unsuitable for defending yourself against larger threats.

Buckshot continues to be the top choice for self-defense and home-defense applications. These .410 loads typically carry less than a dozen pellets, depending on their size, which you'll see advertised anywhere from #000 up through #4. There are also specialty loads that contain unique payloads to enhance the stopping power of the small, yet mighty .410 shotshell.

Hornady’s Critical Defense .410 Triple Defense load packs three formidable projectiles in every shotshell: a .41-caliber FTX Flex Tip slug sitting atop two .35-caliber lead balls. This design will provide a close-range “spread” that places all its internal projectiles on a target within the average defensive encounter distances of seven to fifteen yards. The round balls are designed to resist deformation, aiding in consistent penetration while the flex-tip slug expands upon impact. This option is a top choice for personal defense and is popular among Judge and Governor owners.

Federal Premium’s Personal Defense .410 Handgun #4 Buckshot is a three-inch shell loaded with nine copper-plated #4 buckshot, providing an impressive amount of stopping power in a small, compact package. The brass head on each shell is specially designed for use in handguns, ensuring smooth cycling and extraction so you don’t get jammed up when seconds matter. Federal’s dedicated .410 bore loads offer dependable performance and tight defensive patterns that ensure the shot goes into the target and not objects that surround it. This is especially important when using it in a defensive encounter within the home or other sensitive areas.

With a muzzle velocity of 1100 FPS, it hits hard and deep, with a tight pattern allowing for longer-range hits on stubborn toms that refuse to come any closer. If you forgo a hunting blind, utilize a "sit and stalk" method during turkey season, using these shotshells out of a handgun such as the Magnum Research BFR or similar options helps provide utmost concealability by drastically reducing movement as opposed to bringing along a large 12g or 20g shotgun.

Cheddite Target .410 Bore Shotshells features a 2.5-inch length and a 1/2 oz payload, resulting in a rather low amount of felt recoil and thus more consistent patterning downrange. The #8 birdshot option is an ideal loading for shooting clays, proving to be quite the challenge for seasoned pros accustomed to the larger payloads that accompany 12-gauge and 20-gauge alternatives. For avid hunters, this option is also an ideal choice for doves and similarly sized game birds.

When you take a moment to look at the handguns chambered in .410 bore, it is clear, this platform has a distinct purpose that embodies the perfect balance of portability and terminal performance. Whether you are loading up for an upcoming hunt, heading to the range to break some clays, or preparing for a defensive scenario you hope never happens, the broad spectrum of ammunition available means you can custom-tailor each gun to its intended application. As you weigh your options when it comes to barrel length, capacity, grip style, and more, you're certain to discover that .410 pistols aren't a novelty but instead a versatile platform, understated in its capabilities.
