In today's reloading market, there are countless high-quality micrometer bullet seating dies available. Micrometer seating dies allow you to fine-tune the bullet seating depth in the case to your specifications quickly. After you have seated your bullet to the desired depth and measured it, adjust the Micrometer stem up or down to that depth, and the cartridge will be exactly the length you need—no loosening set screws or turning the seating stem by trial and error.

Hornady Premium Match Grade Die Set

There are two options for getting the Hornady seating die. First one is to buy the Custom Grade Dies set without the Hornady click adjust. This set comes with a stander full-length size die. The other option is to get the Hornady Premium Match Grade 2 Die Set. This set comes with the Premium Match Grade setting die with the click-adjust bullet seating micrometer installed, and the second die in the kit is a full-length bushing die. The seating die in the custom grade die features a Seater adjustment screw for adjusting bullet seating depths, and a Compression Lock O-ring provides the necessary tension to make fine adjustments easier and keeps the die set in place.

Standard lock ring, In‑line Bullet Seating System, the seating system holds the bullet, the case neck, and the seating stem in perfect alignment in the sleeve before the bullet enters the neck of the case. The system includes a floating bullet alignment sleeve, a floating steel seating stem, and a built‑in crimper for benchrest precision. Bullets are aligned in the sleeve as they enter the die for optimum seating and accuracy. You can upgrade this die by installing a Hornady click-adjust bullet seating that measures .001" adjustment for bullet seating depths. Another option is to get the Match Grade seating die, which already features the click adjustment. The die also features an In‑line Bullet Seating System. The Floating seating stem holds the bullet in alignment before the bullet enters the neck of the case. I have used both dies with great success and would not hesitate to use them for any loadings. The click adjust is a great feature and a precise tool. The downside of the Hornady dies is that, as far as I know, you cannot buy the seating die by itself. Both these dies fit a standard 7/8-inch loading press. Different seating stems are available from Hornady for different bullet O-give profiles.

The Most Popular Seating Die:

Redding Competition Bullet Seater

You can buy it by itself or as part of a die set. This is the seating die I have the most experience with, and it is still one of my favorites. The micrometer-adjustable die is calibrated in .001" increments for precise seating depth adjustments, like the Hornady click adjust, and is very precise and infinitely adjustable (no clicks). It also has a zero-set feature that lets you set the micrometer to your preferred seating depth. This must be my favorite part of the die.  Redding's patented design quickly established itself as the go-to straight-line bullet seater for most match shooters. It addressed concentricity problems with some other seating dies of this type. Tighter manufacturing tolerances were made possible due to the details of the floating stem system. The seating stem is precision-ground to match the bullet diameter exactly.

My Personal Favorite Seating Die:

RCBS MatchMaster Competition Bullet Seating Die

This die is relatively new to the market, having been released in December 2024. RCBS did an excellent job with quality, the large Oversize Micrometer for easy adjustments at .001 increments, and obvious numbers. My favorite part of the die is the bullet seating window with the bullet retention system. No more trying to make sure the bullet is perfectly straight, going up into the die, as this system eliminates the need to set the bullet on the case mouth and guide it up with your fingers into the die. Free-floating, self-centering bullet seating stem and adjustable stem for maximum case overall length. This die has performed amazingly, helping me make some of my best ammo, that produced some of the smallest five-shot groups I have ever shot. This die has created the lowest consistency for runout in ammunition I have loaded over the years.

All-Around Performing Micrometer Seating Die:

These seating dies have produced excellent ammunition for thousands of rounds of 308 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield loading. This die includes all the popular straight-line seating features of the original bench-resting seating die, plus an ultra-accurate Micrometer for adjusting bullet seating depth. The Micrometer allows fine-tuning in either direction; easily adjustable to .0005″ in gradations at increments of .001″ are clearly marked. Bright, white markings make the micrometer easy to read. These dies have served me well for many years, and I still use them to this day.

Best Arbor Press Seating Die:

Wilson Stainless Steel Bullet Seater with Micrometer Adjustment

The most accurate straight-line bullet seater for those looking to get the best out of their handloads. Micrometer adjustment ensures repeatable, precise COL (Case Overall Length) control at the bench or on the range. A built-in micrometer seating depth adjustment feature with an easy-to-read scale in .001 to .050 for a complete turn. Major seating adjustments can be made with the 3/8" - 24 TPI threads in the cap. This die also includes a seating cap, a bullet seater die body, a bullet seater base, and an adjustable seating stem.

The die is unique because it lets you load rounds long, take them to the range with an arbor press, and adjust the COL as needed to dial in what your rifle likes for a COL. It also works differently from most seating dies. To use the die, place the primed, charged case on the base with a bullet in the case mouth, then put the die body and seating cap with the seating stem in an arbor press and pull the handle until it stops. Check the round is correctly seated at the depth you wish; if not, adjust. It’s really that easy. Wilson offers a VLD seating stem if you find that the stem that comes with the die is not giving you the desired result. If you are planning to load extremely long VLD-style bullets, I would start with the VLD stem.

The one downside to getting a Micrometer adjustment is the price compared to a standard seating die. But if you are switching between bullets a lot, or want the precision of a micrometer, it’s the way to go. Whether you are using a standard press or an arbor press, there are plenty of great options out on the market in a few different price ranges that you can select the best micro seating die for your application and budget.
