In my feature article on Berry’s rifle bullets and shooting-related equipment in the November 2020 issue of Shooting Times, I mentioned the company’s fantastic electric brass tumbler. But it’s just one part of the company’s brass-cleaning system. There’s more.
We all know that when cleaning cartridge cases you shouldn’t tumble small cases with larger ones because the little ones become firmly lodged in the bigger ones. Berry’s has solved the dilemma with its neat rotary Pro Brass Sorter/Media Separator “clamshell” that has adjustable openings. (Berry’s calls them “shutters.”)
(Shooting Times photo) One thing you can do with it is sort brass by size. Here’s the drill: Start with the shutters closed, then place some of the mixed-caliber brass into the basket (no media) and latch it closed. Next, open the shutters until the smallest case falls through into the basket. Check to make sure the next larger case doesn’t fall through the shutters into the basket. Turn the separator with its handles until all of the smallest cases have fallen into the basket. Remove them and repeat the process for each different sized case in the mix.
Then tumble each batch of cases as usual in the tumbler using your preferred cleaning media. Use the Pro Brass Sorter/Media Separator set on its smallest shutter opening to separate out the media.
