Shooting Times Picks The Best New Shotguns For 2017

A host of new shotguns was introduced in 2017. Many of these new shotguns are traditional in style, but some are entirely unique. All are worthy of your attention. Whether you fancy a pump, semiauto or even some lever-action models, there is something for every shoot in this roundup of the best new shotguns for 2017.

Stevens Model 320

Savage's Stevens brand pump-action Model 320 Field Grade is now available in 20 gauge with a pink-on-black Muddy Girl synthetic stock. Barrel length is 22 inches, and weight is 6.9 pounds. MSRP: $273

Stoeger P3500

Stoeger's new-for-2017 pump-action 12-gauge P3500 has a synthetic stock, a Modified choke tube, and a 3ó-inch chamber. It has a chrome-lined barrel with a red-bar front sight, dual action bars, and a rotating bolt head. It can be had in black or camo finishes, and it comes with sling-swivel studs. Barrel length is 26 or 28 inches, and weight is 7.1 pounds. MSRP: $399 to $449

TriStar Viper Max

TriStar has expanded its Viper line of semiautomatic shotguns with the Viper Max, a gas-operated waterfowl gun that takes 3ó-inch 12-gauge shells. The Viper Max comes with two gas pistons — one for heavy loads, the other for lighter ammo — allowing the user to shoot light target loads in his duck gun. Here's a clever twist: The second piston can be stored in the forearm for easy retrieval. The gun comes with four Beretta Optima choke tubes and is available in black or Realtree Max-5 camo. Barrel length ranges from 26 to 30 inches, and weight ranges from 7.3 to 7.4 pounds. MSRP: $640 to $730

Winchester Super X4

Winchester's new Super X4 semiauto builds on the well-established Super X3 and is said to be lighter, faster cycling, and more ergonomic than previous models. The new gun is subdivided into four variants: the SX4, Waterfowl Hunter, Field, and Field Compact. All are 12 gauge with 3ó-inch or 3-inch chambers, vent ribs, back-bored barrels, self-adjusting Active Valve System actions, and large bolt handles and bolt release buttons. Barrel length is 24 or 26 inches, and weight is 6.75 pounds. MSRP: $940 to [imo-slideshow gallery=139],070

ATI Omni Hybrid

The .410 Bore Omni Hybrid AR-15 shotgun from American Tactical Imports (ATI) runs on a short-stroke, balanced piston gas system. The polymer-reinforced upper is built to regular AR mil-spec, and the barrel is threaded for Remington-style chokes. It's chambered for 2ó-inch shells. The Omni comes with one, five-round polymer magazine, and extra 15-round magazines are also available. The gun has a 13-inch KeyMod handguard and an adjustable Rogers M4 Super-Stoc. Barrel length is 18.5 inches, and weight is 6.6 pounds. MSRP: $650

Barrett Sovereign Rutherford

Barrett Sovereign, a new brand for Barrett Firearms, long known for its .50 BMG rifles, now has several models of Italian- made side-by-side and over-under shotguns, including the Rutherford. The field-grade over-under Rutherford is offered in 12, 16, 20, and 28 gauges. Chambers are 3 inches except the 16 and 28 gauges, which are 2. inches. The barrels are rated for steel shot and have dainty ventilated ribs. The Turkish walnut stocks are beautifully shaped with Prince of Wales pistol grips and are nicely finished and checkered. Barrel lengths are 26 and 28 inches, and weights range from 6.2 to 7.5 pounds. MSRP: gallery=139,200 to gallery=139,520

Benelli Ethos

As we reported in the April issue, Benelli has the new Super Black Eagle 3 this year. The company also has a new 28-gauge Ethos shotgun. The new Ethos is the first gun to be chambered for Fiocchi's new 3-inch 28-gauge shell, with up to 11„16  ounces of shot. It has AA Grade wood and an engraved nickel-plated receiver. It is as light as a feather and points like an extension of your arm. Barrel length is 26 inches, and weight is 5.3 pounds. MSRP: gallery=139,199

Beretta A300 Outlander Turkey

One of Beretta's new-for-2017 shotguns is the gas-operated A300 Outlander Turkey in Realtree XTRA Green camo. It's chambered for 12-gauge 3-inch shells and has TruGlo fiberoptic sights, a reversible safety, and sling attachments. It comes with an extended Full choke, and the receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Barrel length is 24 inches, and weight is 7.6 pounds. MSRP: $900

Browning A5

The big splash at Browning this year is a specialized version of the A5 called the Wicked Wing. It's offered with Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Blades, Realtree Max-5, and Mossy Oak Bottomlands camo finishes and utilizes Browning's short recoil operated Kinematic Drive System action, which harnesses recoil energy and converts it into mechanical motion. Unlike the original Auto-5, the barrel remains stationary. Browning says it's the fastest-cycling recoil-operated shotgun on the planet. Barrel length is 28 inches, and weight is 7.3 pounds. CZ-USA 628

With the Model 628 Field Select, CZ-USA has added the 28 gauge to its pump action series. The Model 628 Field Select is classy, with high-gloss bluing, a high-grade Turkish walnut buttstock, and a full-sized forearm. The gauge-specific scaled action has a 7075 aluminum-alloy receiver and a vent-rib barrel. Barrel length is 28 inches, and weight is 5.4 pounds. MSRP: $429

Henry Lever Action

Henry has two new lever-action .410 Bore shotguns that are based on the company's .45-70 rifle. They have three-quarter-length tubular magazines, checkered American walnut pistol-grip stocks, sling-swivel studs, and ventilated rubber recoil pads. One is the Lever Action .410 Shotgun, and it has a removable Full choke, a bead front sight, and no rear sight. The other is the Lever Action .410 Rare Carbine, and it has a fixed Cylinder Bore choke, a bead front sight, and an adjustable rear sight. Barrel lengths are 20 and 24 inches, and weights are 7.3 and 7.5 pounds. MSRP: $850 to $902

Mossberg SA-28

Mossberg has a new gas-operated semiautomatic 28-gauge shotgun called the SA-28. It has a slim ventrib barrel, a bead front sight, five choke tubes, a Turkish walnut stock, and blued finish. Barrel length is 26 inches, and weight is 6.5 pounds. MSRP: $654

Remington V3 Walnut

Remington's popular 12-gauge V3 shotgun is now available with a satin-finished American walnut stock and forearm. The V3 Walnut features a light contour vent-rib barrel, twin bead sights, and a black oxide finish on the receiver. Barrel length is 26 or 28 inches, and weight is 7.2 pounds. MSRP: $995
