10 Great Vehicle Transportation Options for Firearms

10 Great Vehicle Transportation Options for Firearms

Many of us transport firearms in our vehicles every day. While these firearms are in transit we want to be sure they are protected against damage and theft. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1.4 million firearms were stolen from 2005 to 2010, and many of those guns were taken from vehicles. It's vital, therefore, to transport your firearms in a manner that keeps the guns secured and out of the hands of criminals.

Growing up, gun racks mounted in pickup trucks were common, but today leaving your firearm in plain sight is risky because bold criminals are willing to risk arrest for the chance to make a few hundred dollars off a stolen firearm. Today's gun owner would be well advised to seek out a more secure method of transport. The good news is companies offer innovative products for transporting firearms securely at various price points. Here's a look at nine of our favorite vehicle transport options and what sets them apart in this growing market.

Armloc II

Franzen Security Products' Armloc II comes with two brackets: a rail bracket for mounting the unit onto a bedframe and a flat bracket allowing the unit to be mounted to any flat surface in your vehicle. Because of the Armloc II's unique design, locking the unit also locks the entire safe to the bracket, making it virtually impossible for any thief to steal. When the case is opened, it is possible to remove the Armloc II from the bracket. The exterior is hardened with Kevlar and is six times stronger than steel by weight, and there is a personalized combination lock on the unit with 1,000 possible combinations as well as a key lock. The unit has a maximum outside dimension of 13 ¾ inches.

Big Sky Racks

Big Sky Racks feature square tube construction and a telescoping tube that allows them to fit into most vehicles and UTVs. Adjustable brackets slide along the length of the square tube and can be tightened with set screws so that they stay in place. The Sky Bar has padded foam inside the firearm brackets, which prevents your gun from being scratched, and it is available in one- or two-gun configurations. The Big Rack series doesn't lock, but this is a convenient, economical way to transport firearms that doesn't take up a lot of space in a vehicle. Big Sky Racks are available in single- or double-firearm configurations.
Price: $65.95-$124.95

Console Vault

With 65 different products to fit more than a hundred vehicles, Console Vault is a leader in safe firearms transport. Military, government, law enforcement, private security forces and civilians rely on the company's 12-gauge cold-rolled plate steel vaults with a five-point locking system. A high security barrel locks to protect the user's firearms, and the vault fits into your vehicle's existing console easily. With the lid closed, the Console Vault is invisible, so you won't draw unwanted attention to your truck or SUV, but you'll have quick access to your firearm in an emergency. Each Console Vault is designed to fit in a specific vehicle, and there's a Bagger Vault available for Harley Davidson motorcycles as well. No matter what you drive, these American-made vaults will provide you with the level of security and rapid access you need to keep your guns and yourself safe.
Price: $269.00

GunVault MicroVault

The MicroVault comes in two different styles, a standard version measuring 2 ½ inches wide and 11 inches long (coded as the V500) and an XL version that is 3 ¼ x 10 ¼ x 12, also known as the MV 1000. Both units have a tough exterior steel shell (20 gauge for the MV500, 18 gauge for the MV 1000) and both are available with or without biometric fingerprint identification locks. Both versions can be mounted in a vehicle, and both are lined with a protective interior liner that prevents damage. All GunVault MicroVaults run on one 9-volt battery and feature LED low-battery warning lights. All of the safes also offer key backup, and the biometric units feature an automatic computer block after a series of invalid entries and a tamper indicator that reveals when an unauthorized person has tried to access the vault. The MV 500 weighs 4 pounds, and the MV 1000 weighs twice that, yet these vaults are durable and tough enough to protect your firearm and valuables from even the most ardent thief.
Price: $164.99-$334.99

NRA Jotto Gear Handgun Holster

The NRA Jotto Gear Handgun Holster can be mounted directly to the vehicle, and the steel-frame holster design makes it very difficult for crooks to get to your gun while it remains accessible to the driver. The quick-flip bale locks in place to prevent the firearm from being drawn, and a key lock allows owners to quickly open the bale when they need to access their firearm. The Handgun Holster can be mounted in different positions, including a center console for maximum concealment. The interior is leather lined to protect firearms from damage. The NRA Jotto Gear Handgun Holster does balances firearm security with rapid access.

The RamBox locks for security, is internally lit for ease of use at night, and the lid has an intermediate and full-open (90 degree) position. Mopar also offers the RamBox holster, which securely holds two shotguns or scoped rifles and can be converted to hold six two-piece fishing rods. These stanchions can be adjusted to accommodate firearms or fishing poles of different lengths. The RamBox is one of the best ways to turn your pickup into a rolling gun cabinet.

SIG Sauer Car Rifle Go Bag

Available in black or tan, the SIG Sauer Car Rifle Go Bag straps to the back of your vehicle's front seats. This allows for convenient access to AR pistols, carbines and scoped hunting rifles. Simply unbuckle the retaining straps and pull out the firearm. The only downside is this option lacks security. However, in states where AR pistols can be carried loaded in a vehicle with a concealed carry permit, this is a great option for a handy truck gun.

Price: $49.95

Stack-On Portable Locking Case

The Stack-On Portable Locking Case is compact, measuring just 9.5 inches long and 1.75 inches high, but it provides a level of security for carrying a compact handgun in your vehicle. The TSA-approved case features a key lock and a 1,500-pound cable to prevent theft from your vehicle. Its steel exterior is durable and makes it very difficult for anyone to pry open the box to reveal the contents, so it's also a great place to store credit cards, extra cash and licenses. One of the best things about the Stack-On case is that it is lightweight and portable, so you can simply unlock the cable and carry the box into your home or office as needed.

The composition of TruckVault and TrunkVault units makes them extremely difficult for crooks to get into, and with a custom fit, you have a number of options available such as All-Weather versions perfect for pickup beds and units that lift up to access a spare tire.
